Common Ground Collective
Common Ground Collective is a newly formed group of artists, initiated as a direct response to the Bradley Fold Residency and the Environmental Hubs & Allotment Diaries project led by Elizabeth Wewiora. Each of the 6 artists resident to the Bradley Fold Allotments came together to explore issues of environment, sustainability and community. Our initial meetings together on the allotment site merely scratched the surface of our potential investigation into these subject matters. Now as a collective we aim to work together on new projects and responsive to new surroundings in order to delve deeper into the potential of collaborative and socially engaged arts practice.
Our first group project was a residency at Rogue Project Space between 3 October - 14 October 2012, with an open studio on 12th - 14th October. We are now working on a second project for the Northern Car Booty http://carbootymcr.tumblr.com in collaboration with the Mustard Tree Allotment site in Ancoats, Manchester http://www.mustardtree.org.uk
Common Ground Collective is:
Tasha Whittle
Tracey Eastham
Liz Wewiora
Simon Jones
Claire Tindale
Kai-Oi Jay Yung
This project has been supported by Grants for the Arts, Arts Council England and special thanks to Li-en Yeung and Mark Watson and everyone at Bradley Fold Allotments
Below is a selection of work made at the Rogue Project Space Residency. The focus was developing our findings at the Allotment Site. My interest was more images of landscape rather than actual nature and so I worked with images of still life paintings from a 'history of art' book. I feel as though relationships with nature are often heavily influenced by, if not wholly determined by, our interaction with images of it. I was also interested in this idea of 'hobby painting' and it's link with 'hobby gardening'. I therefore chose watercolour. What I have found with watercolour painting is that there is a huge importance placed on specific colours, along with specialised pigments designed to reflect the variety and 'naturalness' of nature. So I copied the image through tiny squares of individually mixed colour. What results is a pixelated, intricate and (hopefully) beguiling painting/collage.
